Eleven graduate students in Eastern Kentucky University’s communication disorders program recently received scholarships from Scottish Rite.

The organization awarded each student a $4,300 scholarship for the 2016-17 academic year. Since 2006, Scottish Rite has awarded approximately $320,000 in scholarships to first-year graduate students in communication disorders at EKU.

This year’s recipients are: Kristen Baker, Bethany Grubbs, Pineville, Kentucky; Allison Burton, Somerset, Kentucky; Myranda Carpenter, Corbin, Kentucky; Charity Clark, Richmond, Kentucky; Molly DeArmond, Lexington, Kentucky; Raylee Kirkland, Mayslick, Kentucky; Zoe Mires, Madison, Indiana; Jamie Murphy, Robinson, Illinois; Brittany O’Brien, Louisville, Kentucky; and Katelin Plumley, Paintsville, Kentucky.

The scholarships are designed to support the students as they prepare to work professionally with children and adults with speech, language and swallowing disorders.

“The Scottish Rite scholarships have allowed our students to focus on their academics while reducing the financial burden and the stress from dealing with limited income,” said Dr. Charlotte Hubbard, program director
