Guitar Studies at EKU

EKU offers a wide variety of guitar opportunities to majors and non-majors alike. Under the direction of Dennis Davis, Ph.D., guitar education at EKU is forward thinking and focuses on contemporary styles as well as classical, solo and ensemble performance, guitar history, and guitar pedagogy. With numerous performance and recording opportunities, including guitar ensembles, jazz ensemble and combos, early music chamber groups, musicals, and solo studio and divisional recitals, you’ll become a well-rounded guitarist at one of the most diverse guitar programs in the United States.

The following guitar courses are available each fall and spring semester in the School of Music:

  • MUS 107 Class Guitar for Non-Majors
This class is designed for non-music majors and those who want to learn how to play guitar or already play at a beginning level.
  • MUS 132F/232F/332F/432F Applied Guitar
Private lessons focus on interpretation, technique, sight-reading, fretboard visualization, improvisation, the history of the guitar, and culminate in historically informed and musically expressive performances.
  • MUS 257/457 Guitar Ensemble
This “on call” ensemble performs regularly throughout the year and focuses on classical guitar playing.
  • MUS 250 Electric Guitar Ensemble
This ensemble focuses on amplified guitars in various popular styles.

Course Information: MUS 256
Meeting Time: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 4:40-6:40 pm

The EKU Guitar Ensemble is directed by Dennis Davis, Ph.D., and is open to all students at EKU by audition. The ensemble divides into acoustic and electric performing groups and presents literature that spans from the Renaissance to the modern era. The group can also divide into smaller assortments of quartets, trios, and duos, depending upon the engagement.

The ensemble meets as a class for four hours each week and students rehearse outside of class for five more hours (or as long as necessary). The guitar ensemble is a major ensemble and students earn one hour of academic credit per semester. Non-music majors can contact Dennis Davis at dennis.davis@eku.edu to schedule an audition.

Notable Performances
The EKU Guitar Ensemble’s performances have been broadcasted nationally on NPR and regionally on television and radio, including a full-length concert on the Red Barn Radio show.

Performances outside of Kentucky include concert appearances at venues in Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina and Michigan. Their performances have garnered praise from world renown guitarists such as William Kanengiser, Joseph Hagedorn, and Marcin Dylla.

Other notable performances include appearances at the Mid-America Guitar Ensemble Festival, the Frankfort Arts Foundation, pre-concert music for Pepe Romero (Centre College), the Barcelona Guitar Orchestra, and The Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra (Singletary Center for the Arts).

The EKU Guitar Ensemble performs frequently to enthusiastic audiences at regional universities, secondary and elementary schools, civic groups, churches, and similar venues.
