Why is living on campus important?

Eastern Kentucky University has a two-year residency requirement because we strongly believe that living on campus provides both immediate and long-term benefits. Both national studies and those specific to EKU confirm that students who reside on campus:

  • Tend to remain in school at a higher rate and have higher GPAs than those who never lived on campus.
  • Come into contact more often with their peers and may be exposed to different ideas and cultures that strengthen communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Tend to be more involved in campus activities and have more contact with faculty, university staff members, and other students, which results in deeper, more meaningful relationships that often continue beyond their time at EKU.

Campus Living Options

To keep housing costs clear and consistent, EKU groups rooms into tiers based on size and amenities. We offer three living styles: community (Tiers 1 and 2), suite (Tiers 3, 4, and 5), and apartment (Tier A).

Each room includes a bed, desk, chair, and dresser for each student. At least one closet or wardrobe will be available, along with window blinds and internet access. Residents may bring additional furniture, but all university-provided furniture must stay in the room.

Housing rates are per semester (fall or spring) and stay the same within an academic year. For example, your spring 2026 rate will match what you paid in fall 2025. Rates may be updated each fall and are for double-occupancy rooms unless noted otherwise.

Room sizes vary, and the dimensions provided are typical examples to be used for reference only. Exact measurements for individual rooms are not available.

Tier 1 – Community

These halls offer spaces which house two residents per room and offer a community bathroom. Tier 1 spaces offer affordable living in a close-knit community where students get involved and easily engage with others.

Mattox Hall

Mattox Hall is the perfect community for students who want a great campus location! While living in Mattox you will enjoy views of the Carloftis gardens while it’s also located in proximity to the campus recreation center, and just steps from the Powell Student Center and Case Dining Hall, Mattox Hall is a perfect location to enjoy the conveniences of campus.


Please note: there is no elevator available in Mattox Hall.

Mattox Hall also offers a computer lounge with TV, a kitchenette, and free laundry facilities on the 1st floor.

Mattox Hall beds can be raised to provide additional storage or a study area underneath the beds.

    • McGregor Hall

    Nestled in the center of campus, McGregor Hall is an exciting place to live! Located in the center of campus, McGregor is convenient to the Library, Powell Student Center, and the Case Dining Hall.

    McGregor Hall also offers community TV and computer lounges, and a laundry and kitchenette facility on lower floor of the building.

    Now open to all students, Palmer Hall is the perfect community for students who want a central campus location! With a beautiful view of the historic Ravine, and centrally located within walking distance to the Case Dining, Powell Student Center, and the Crabbe Library, Sullivan Hall is perfect for students who want to be in the middle of the action at EKU.

    • Tier 2 – Community

    Burnam Hall

    • Clay Hall

    With a welcoming lounge and a beautiful outdoor patio, Clay Hall is a great place to live at EKU. Centrally located, Clay Hall is convenient to the Case Dining Hall, Powell Student Center, and the Science Building.

    Exclusive to students who have earned 60+ post-high school credit hours or are 21+ by the first day of the Fall semester, Grand Campus Apartments offer individual bedrooms and bathrooms with a shared living space, full kitchen, and private laundry room.

    Grand Campus

    EKU Housing and Residence Life offers apartment-style living for upperclassmen students, which includes the conveniences of campus life. Grand Campus is a 500+ room apartment complex, exclusive to students who have earned 60+ post-high school credit hours or those who are 21+ by the first day of the Fall semester. Grand Campus offers a beautiful on-campus location with many amenities that are not found in standard traditional Residence Halls.

    In addition to EKU Housing’s Grand Campus office, you will find a full Rec-room and Lounge inside the Clubhouse, including a pool table, multiple large screen televisions, and a small computer lounge with printer access.

    Each Unit Features:

    • Room Selection & the Housing Application

    Room Selection gives you the opportunity to pick your living space for the upcoming semester! In order to select your space, you must complete the Housing Application.

    • The Housing Application can be found in your Housing Portal.
    • This application MUST be completed by all students who plan to live on campus in the Fall of 2026.
    • The Colonel Commitment Fee (New First Time Freshmen) or the Housing Commitment Fee (All Non-New First Time Freshmen).
    • Please complete the Roommate Questionnaire in the Housing Application honestly. This will be used to assist in matching you with another student.
    • As a new student, to be a part of the priority room selection process, you must apply by March 1, 2026. Completing your Housing Application early does NOT guarantee you will have first choice of room selection.
    • If you would like to live in a Living Learning Community, complete the LLC application as part of the Housing Application. Additional information about placement will be available during the Room Selection process. The deadline to apply for an LLC as a new student is March 1, 2026.

    Insurance Options

    One of the most important things to do when you begin living on your own is to protect your valuables. While we hope you never have to use it, insurance is important to have should an incident occur and your property is damaged. Please be aware neither the university nor the Office of Housing and Residence Life is able to cover damage to student property.
