Institutional Animal Use and Care Committee

The Institutional Animal Use and Care Committee is managed by the Office of Academic Affairs.

The mission of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is to promote and safeguard activities that involve animals within the academic community. The IACUC is a University committee composed of faculty members who are appointed by the institution, a veterinarian, and a community representative. The Committee is responsible for reviewing all activities involving the use of vertebrate animals, regardless of the source of funding for the activity. The following are the goals of the IACUC:

  • To promote quality research and scholarship
  • To evaluate and review all activities involving the use of vertebrate animals and make recommendations regarding these studies
  • To offer assistance in educating the campus on requirements of the University’s animal care and use program

Member Training

As defined in EKU’s PHS Assurance, IACUC members are required to complete three educational requirements.

PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals Tutorial
At least once every three years, members are required to certify that they have completed the online PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals Tutorial (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/tutorial/index.htm). A signed certification must be submitted to Sponsored Programs for the IACUC records.

OLAW Website Resources
IACUC members are required to devote a minimum of one hour reviewing information available on the Office of Lab Animal Welfare website ( http://grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/olaw.htm) during each calendar year. A signed certification must be submitted to Sponsored Programs for the IACUC records.

CITI Online Training
The CITI “Essentials for IACUC Members” training must be completed at least once every three years. Click here for instructions on registering for and completing the online training. Sponsored Programs can access training records through the CITI administrative interface.
