Established in the fall of 2002, Eastern Kentucky’s Center for Environmental Education has been actively engaged to achieve the following goals:

  1. Provide environmental education training to formal and nonformal educators at a local and regional level.
  2. Develop and implement environmental programs and curriculum.
  3. Coordinate activities and services with other institutions of higher learning.
  4. Assist the community in understanding environmental issues.
  5. Conduct and evaluate research in environmental education.

In conjunction with the College of Education and the College of STEM at EKU, the CEE supports undergraduate and graduate course work leading to a 12-credit hour University Environmental Education certificate. This program has been accredited by the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE).  NAAEE Accreditation: Distinguished College and University Programs formally recognizes high quality college and university programs that consistently prepare well-qualified environmental educators.  A panel of nationally recognized environmental education experts conducted the Accreditation process, which involves a rigorous review of program design and implementation, including assessment data.

EE also trains several AmeriCorps Environmental Education Leadership Corps (EELCorps) members each year in positions serving through the EKU Division of Natural Areas.

In addition to providing environmental education training and professional development workshops, the CEE is an active member of Kentucky University Partnership for Environmental Education. KUPEE is a collaboration of the eight State Universities’ Centers for Environmental Education dedicated to increasing the environmental literacy of all the citizens of the Commonwealth through environmental education.
