Play an Integral Role in a Data-Driven World

Math is more than crunching numbers

The growing need for professionals who can think logically, analyze large data sets, solve complex math-driven problems, and effectively communicate findings has put mathematics and statistics graduates in high demand in today’s job market. With a diverse curriculum, caring faculty, and the latest in mathematical and statistical software, EKU’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics will prepare students for success in a data-driven world.

Why Study Mathematics & Statistics at EKU?

The department of mathematics and statistics has a committed and caring faculty and is dedicated to helping students in pursuit of a degree in mathematics, data science, or statistics. We offer a variety of programs with options to tailor the degree to your needs. Our curriculum includes a wide variety of course offerings, including seminars and graduate courses available to advanced undergraduate students. We also have an active student organization Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME) that provides a network of students with similar interests. We proudly serve the campus community by providing services through the Mathematics and Statistics Tutoring Center and Statistical Consulting Center.

Statistical Consulting Center

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Eastern Kentucky University has operated the Statistical Consulting Center (SCC) since the fall semester of 2008. A research support service, the SCC provides free statistical consulting services to fully affiliated faculty, staff, and students. It is staffed by statistics faculty who are assisted by graduate students in the applied mathematics program.

Graduate and honors thesis students who work with data in research are encouraged to seek the advice and assistance of consultants at the SCC. Consultants can offer support and analysis of validity of the research design, adequacy of the sample size, appropriateness of the statistical model, and accuracy and reliability of the results.

To make an appointment, use the consultation request form. Appointments are only available during the fall and spring semesters when classes are in session. Advisor permission must be obtained before receiving assistance from the SCC. It is recommended that both advisor and student attend the SCC consultation.

Coffee Time Series

Coffee Time is a series of interactive presentations by faculty and students of mathematical and statistical topics. Talks in the series are generally brief in order to allow time for questions and conversations afterward. Coffee and snacks are available before each presentation.

Student Stories & Features

  • Madeline Bentsen

    EKU Forensic Science Graduate
The faculty was tough and fair, they wanted me to succeed and they pushed me to think critically and logically. However, they were very understanding and cared deeply for their students. They helped to prepare me for the field of forensics and helped me strengthen my weaknesses.
  • Brad Rich

    EKU Forensic Science Graduate
The thing that I feel like many people, including myself, find surprising about the program is how encompassing it is. It’s not all chemistry or biology but also public speaking and critical thinking incorporated with mock trial and capstone that truly prepare you for the field of forensic science. After graduating I realized just how well I was prepared by the faculty in my program, making the transition from education to career seamless.
  • Madison High

EKU Environmental and Applied Geology Graduate
My degree provided me with the knowledge I needed to get a solid start to my career. I was able to get a job with the Kentucky Geological Survey within a few months of graduating and I am thrilled to be working for them. I also took the ASBOG Fundamentals of Geology exam shortly after graduating and passed it on my first try.
