Career Outlook


A degree in exercise and sport science opens doors to many new opportunities, increases interprofessional collaborations, and increases employability. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of athletic trainers is projected to grow 14 percent from now until 2032, much faster than the average for all other occupations. Employment of physical therapists is projected to grow 15 percent during this same time, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Program Options

Choose between three concentrations that offer the opportunity to tailor the degree to specific career goals and give you a competitive edge in the job market. Options include:

Gain the knowledge and skills necessary to enter careers such as personal training, strength and conditioning, corporate, commercial or hospital wellness, and community fitness and recreation.

Designed for students interested in a post-professional degree in physical therapy, this option includes the prerequisite courses needed to apply to Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs. Courses are taught by faculty with extensive backgrounds in preparing students for physical therapy training.

Prepare for a professional-level athletic training program through foundational courses, necessary prerequisites, and program faculty dedicated to your success.

The 3+2 option offers a pathway to complete both the B.S. and M.S. in exercise and sport science degrees with a concentration in physical fitness and wellness management in as few as five years.

Curriculum & Admission


EKU provides a comprehensive degree program that leads to a solid understanding of exercise and sport science. EKU’s curriculum blends academic and professional preparation through comprehensive course topics, hands-on learning, and experience through internships.

All program options prepare students to pursue a variety of rewarding career possibilities or to excel in graduate school.

A minimum of 120 credits are required to graduate, including 42 upper-division credits.

Please review the admissions requirements before applying for this or any program. If you have questions about the program or are planning to register for classes, please speak to the program advisor.

Students may transfer up to 90 hours of credit from accredited institutions. Please note that a minimum of 30 credit hours in this degree program must be completed at Eastern Kentucky University.

Previously earned credits must be reviewed upon admission to EKU for appropriate articulation.

All applicants must provide an application and evidence of appropriate scholastic achievement through prior educational experience.

Please note that certain degree programs have special admission requirements. Admission to the University does not mean automatic admission to all degree programs.

The completed application and all required supporting documentation must be received by the University no later than:

• August 1 for fall enrollment
• December 1 for spring enrollment
• May 1 for summer enrollment
