The Department of Agriculture offers a four-year degree program in Animal and Veterinary Sciences (B.S.). Students can choose a concentration in Pre-Veterinary Medicine or Animal Science.
In both degree programs, students routinely receive hands-on training with livestock animals (dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens) at Meadowbrook Farm and in our animal science teaching labs where they may practice dissections, microscope technology, DNA extraction, blood and fecal diagnostic tests, and more!
Students will work closely with the Animal and Veterinary Science faculty advisors. We formally meet with students at least once a semester to assist them with selecting their upcoming classes, finding internships, navigating job opportunities etc.
Pre-Veterinary Medicine Concentration
The Pre-Veterinary Medicine concentration is designed for students who desire to pursue veterinary school after college. The academic program meets all the pre-requisite course requirements for Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. This is because Kentucky does not have an in-state veterinary school. Auburn University serves as the Kentucky in-state school. Many of our students, however, have interest in applying to other veterinary schools. The program can be tailored to fit the course pre-requisite requirements of any veterinary school.
Animal Science Concentration
The Animal Science concentration is designed for students who desire to pursue a career in the animal science industry and / or to attend graduate school to earn a Master’s or PhD degree. Careers in the animal science industry are plentiful, and include options such as animal nutrition / feed industry, pharmaceuticals, food sciences, sales, research and development, extension, private consultants, geneticist, writer for animal related publication, USDA, FDA, EPA, public health, and much more!
What Sets EKU Apart
Something that sets our Animal and Veterinary Science program apart from other institutions, is that the two concentrations (Pre-Veterinary and Animal Science) are quite similar. This is important because occasionally a student may desire to switch from one academic concentration to the other. This transition can be done seamlessly without losing academic credits.
