Master of Arts in Applied Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers the Master of Arts degree in Applied Mathematics. Students may select a concentration in Secondary Mathematics or Applied Mathematics and Statistics. All students are required to take Applied Linear Algebra, Combinatorial Optimization, Mathematical Statistics, and Applied Mathematics Capstone; students may choose between Technology for Teaching and Research or Statistical Methods Using SAS as part of the core.

Program Highlights

  • 30 credit hours
  • Unique applied core and choice of two concentrations (Secondary Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and Statistics)
  • Customizable program that allows students to choose courses geared toward careers in education, industry, or government
  • More than 18 hours of graduate credits in mathematics, which allows participants to teach at the post-secondary level or teach dual-credit courses
  • Convenient course meeting times for graduate students with full-time jobs or otherwise busy schedules (hybrid classes with 3 Saturday meetings per semester, e-Presence classes that allow students to attend via webcam, and some evening and online classes)
  • Regular offerings of graduate mathematics (content and pedagogical) courses designed for mathematics teachers
  • Various applied mathematics and statistics courses that provide students with highly marketable skills such as data analysis and computing
  • Capstone course with individualized project to meet exit requirement
  • Degree can be applied toward Rank 1 or Rank 2
  • Small classes with individualized attention
  • Caring, experienced faculty

Admission Requirements

Clear admission to graduate standing will be granted to those students who have the following:
1. Scores of 144 or higher on the Verbal Reasoning portion and 147 or higher on the Quantitative Reasoning portion of the Graduate Record Exam. Applicants with cumulative undergraduate GPA’s of 3.0 or higher are exempt from the GRE requirement.
2. An undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
3. Prerequisites for the core courses. (For example, six hours of calculus and courses in linear algebra and statistics would be sufficient.) Applicants who do not have this preparation may be granted admission with the prerequisites but are required to take the courses needed to strengthen their backgrounds. Students seeking a change in Kentucky Teacher rank must have initial certification in secondary mathematics.
