General Education
General Education Requirements
The mission of general education is to promote learning that is central to the intellectual pursuits associated with our educational programs and to enable students to make informed choices about matters of public and personal significance in a democratic society and global community.
The general education program helps students to become informed, independent thinkers by developing competencies in communication, quantitative analysis, and critical thinking by helping them understand and appreciate culture, individuals, the natural environment, and the global society. Courses that are used to satisfy the program’s major requirements cannot also be used to satisfy general education requirements.
Success First
The Success First program is designed for first-time freshmen who are admitted with a 2.0-2.49 high school GPA and/or test scores requiring students to take English and Math classes with support.
Students with two or more academic readiness area requirements or have a high school GPA between 2.0 and 2.49 are enrolled as associate degree or “exploratory” majors. They are permitted 16 hours of University enrollment, unless otherwise specified by admission status. The Office of Advising & Career Services will assist these students in establishing connections to the departments of their intended majors.
