Master of Science

Mission Statement

Graduate education in the Department of Recreation and Park Administration at Eastern Kentucky University will prepare students for administrative roles in the recreation and tourism sectors of the Commonwealth, United States, and throughout the world with a curriculum focused on problem solving, research and creative activity. The structure of the graduate program will be such that the degree program can be completed by professionals attending part time or by students wishing to complete the program in an expedited fashion.

M.S. Program Goals

  • To enhance the marketability of each student in professional roles and responsibilities.
  • To ensure each student can understand and apply research and problem solving processes to recreation and leisure services.
  • To have each student understand the overall administrative process for recreation and leisure services.
  • To provide opportunities for scholarly and service endeavors (i.e. published paper, professional presentation, grant proposal, supervising a community event etc.).

MS Degree Curriculum

Core – 18 hours

REC 801 – Park, Recreation and Tourism Research Methods
Emphasis will be on applied research methods in the field of parks, recreation, leisure and tourism. Prepares students to understand and identify appropriate data collection methods, sampling, questionnaire design, data analysis, and interpretation of research literature.

REC 809 – Advanced Study in Recreation
Directed study of topics in recreation and leisure. An advanced study project and individual meetings with instructor are required. An advanced study proposal form must be approved prior to enrollment.

REC 825 – Philosophy of Recreation and Leisure
Examination of recreation theory and practice from both research and empirical bases. Significance of leisure and recreation for the individual and society. recreation’s future in a changing cultural milieu.

REC 830 – Outdoor Recreation in America
A study and analysis of outdoor recreation policy development and agency management. Students will develop an awareness of and appreciation for American outdoor recreation services. The history of outdoor recreation from the 19th century to today will be examined.

REC 840 – Administrative Processes and Practices 
Principles and concepts of administration, in-depth investigation of budgeting, policy formulation, and legislative provisions.

REC 850 – Recreation and Tourism Marketing
The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an in-depth understanding of marketing in the public and commercial recreation sectors, parks, and leisure services.

Therapeutic Recreation Concentration – Example Courses

REC 711 – Therapeutic Recreation Practices and Services
Interventions and utilization of terminology. apply leadership skills, assistive technology, and programming applications.

REC 712 – Management of Therapeutic Recreation
Prerequisite: for majors only. Management concepts applied to delivering therapeutic recreation services, and includes: documentation, activity analysis, assessment, liability, legislation and standards of practice. Includes 15 service learning hours.

REC 870 – REC Quality Assurance in Therapeutic Recreation
Examine the components of quality assurance and techniques for evaluation related to programs, management, and patient outcomes in therapeutic recreation settings.

REC 871 – REC Administration and Ethics in Therapeutic Recreation
Understand the characteristics of ethics and administrative management, as related to human services in therapeutic recreation.

HEA 816 – Public Health Organization and Administration
In-depth exploration of the myriad of forces impacting public health organization and administration at local, state, and national level; the relationship between legislative action, effectiveness of public health efforts, and future of public health.

ECO 770 – Health Care Economics
Introduction to health economics, including the study of the demand for and production of medical care, health care planning, regulation, finance and evaluation.

POL 801 – Administration, Ethics, and Public Policy
An analysis and overview of the interplay of ethical considerations, administration, and policy process in the public sector.

REC 716 – Recreation and Park Interpretive Services
The interpretation of natural, historical and cultural resources in recreation and park settings. Frequent agency visits and educational field seminars are components of this course.

REC 730 – Park Management
Park purposes and operations with an emphasis on natural resources and visitor management. Concentration on design, resource conservation and preservation, public relations, park policies.

REC 830 – Outdoor Recreation in America
A study and analysis of outdoor recreation policy development and agency management. Students will develop an awareness of and appreciation for American outdoor recreation services. The history of outdoor recreation from the 19th century to today will be examined.

BIO 785 –  Wildlife Resource Policy and Administration
Discussion of state, regional, national, and international policies and agencies which impact management of wildlife resources; with emphasis in North America.

GEO 753 – GIS Research Applications
Advanced concepts, operations, and applications of raster and vector GIS. Spatial analysis using scanning, imagery, GPS, global data sets, and derived data for natural and social applications. Use of standards, megadata, openGIS, and other advances.

Examines what the responsible business-person must know about the Common Law, the regulatory environment, standards of ethical conduct, and the social responsibilities of the modern enterprise.

MGT 821 – Survey of Management
The functions of planning, organizing, leading and controlling the organization. Includes an introduction to concepts of organization behavior and organization theory as applied to the domestic/international business environments.

MKT 825 – Survey of Marketing
Survey of marketing concepts. Major marketing institutions, the marketing mix, and environmental forces are examined. International and societal approaches weighted significantly. Case studies and outside reading reports are used to extend and demonstrate concepts.

Nature of the powers vested in administrative agencies; the problems of administration procedure; the methods and extent of judicial control over administrative action.

POL 801 – Administration, Ethics, and Public Policy
An analysis and overview of the interplay of ethical considerations, administration, and policy process in the public sector.

POL 875 – Public Sector Organizations and Management
Survey of major theories as applied to government agencies and other not-for-profit organizations. Topics covered include classical texts and recent research on theories of organizational behavior.

POL 876 – Public Human Resources Management
Study of strategies and techniques of public human resources management in the public sector and their relationship to pertinent laws, policies, and institutions, in the context of contemporary theories of organizational behavior.

POL 877 – Public Finance Administration
An examination of the effects of economic, administrative, legislative and judicial factors on the fiscal operations of government. Study of the budgetary and financial decision-making process at the federal, state and local levels.

STA 700 – Applied Statistical Inference
Data collection, descriptive statistics, basic probability, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, linear regression, chi-square tests, analysis of variance, and use of statistical software.

COU 802 – Counseling Psychology
Examination of counseling methods and concepts with emphasis on current systems of counseling.

CDF 744 – Early Childhood Development and Program Planning
Theory pertinent to early childhood development and learning including constructiveness, socially mediated intelligence, multiple intelligence and creativity. Emphasis on emergent curriculum and teaching strategies reflecting social collaboration such as webbing, project work, and multimedia documentation.

CDF 747 – Organization and Administration of Early Childhood Programs
Review of the theories influencing the definition of goals, philosophies and rationales for establishment of early childhood programs (0-5), study of procedures for organizing early childhood programs, and discussion of the management processes for administering quality early childhood programs

ECO 770 – Health Care Economics
Introduction to health economics, including the study of the demand for and production of medical care, health care planning, regulation, finance and evaluation.

HEA 794 – Chemical Abuse and Dependency
Study of the nature and progression of chemical abuse and dependency, and effects on the individual, family, and society. Includes study of strategies for prevention, intervention, and treatment.

In-depth exploration of the myriad of forces impacting public health organization and administration at local, state, and national level; the relationship between legislative action, effectiveness of public health efforts, and future of public health.

OTS 810 – OBP: Children and Youth
Evaluating and intervention related to occupational performance in children ages 5-21 accessing health and education systems. Theory driven and client centered practices for supporting occupational performance.

PHE 790 – Disability Sport and Rehabilitation
Study of various topics in physical education and sport selected to meet special student needs and interests.

PSY 837 – Social Psychology and Cultural Diversity
Graduate level survey of topics in social psychology including social influence, persuasion, social cognition, self-justification, aggression and prejudice. Emphasis on multi-cultural diversity and tolerance of other groups.

PSY 857 – Interventions with Children and Families
Interventions procedures for a variety of problems of school-age children are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on developing individual and group intervention skills for assisting children and their families.

BIO 785 – Wildlife Resource Policy and Administration
Discussion of state, regional, national, and international policies and agencies which impact management of wildlife resources; with emphasis in North America.

ECO 780 – Natural Resource and Environmental Economics
Economic tools used in the allocation of natural resources, including policy proposal criteria, resource allocation, conservation, the state’s role, benefit-cost analysis, and environmental impact assessment.

An introduction to principles, strategies, and skills, which are necessary for the planning and implementation of health education and health promotion programs in a diversity of settings.

PHE 723 – Psychology of Sport and Coaching
Scientific study of people and their behavior in sport and exercise contexts and the practical applications of that knowledge.

PHE 835 – Legal Issues in Sport
Principles and concepts of sport in contemporary society with primary emphasis on legal issues that relate to amateur sport.

PHE 851 – Equipment and Facilities in Physical Education
Focus on fundamentals of facilities management: planning and design; funding and operating; modifying of facilities associated with physical education, recreation, and sport programs.

PHE 869 – Organization and Administration of Athletics
Administrative patterns for high school and college athletics; topics include programs, personnel, facilities, athletic organization consideration.

POL 801 – Administration, Ethics, and Public Policy
An analysis and overview of the interplay of ethical considerations, administration, and policy process in the public sector.

POL 721 – Contemporary International Relations
Systematic analysis of major contemporary theories and approaches to the study of international politics and foreign policy.

POL 733 – Seminar in State and Local Politics
A topical analysis of the institutions, policies, and administration of American state and local government.

POL 845 – Community Development
Examines developmental efforts on community level in the United States; relates community development to community organization and examines current efforts, especially those based on the concept of self-help, to generate and implement community development programs.
