General Education Development Test (GED)

Please note: Kentucky requires that General Education Development (GED) testers have a Kentucky address. If a tester does not have a primary ID with a Kentucky address, we must ask for a second form of ID, such as a utility bill or other document that shows the test taker’s Kentucky address.

The GED Tests are developed by the American Council on Education to enable persons who have not graduated from high school to demonstrate the attainment of developed abilities normally acquired through completion of a high school program of study. The GED provides opportunities to transform lives, support families, and build stronger communities. GED Testing Services offers any adult without a high school diploma the opportunity to earn a high school equivalency credential, to be prepared for a better job, to support his or her family, and to realize his or her dreams for a better life.

There are free classes at adult education centers to prepare you to take the GED test. In Kentucky, all first-time test-takers are required to successfully complete GED Ready™ at your local adult education center before taking the GED test.

Madison County residents should contact the Adult Education Center at 270-584-5395 or email.

GED testing is available in the Whitlock Building, Room 340. Registration for the GED should be made by registering via your local adult education center.

Admission Policy

Please arrive carrying a primary ID with a Kentucky address. If you do not have a Kentucky drivers license, ID card, or passport with a Kentucky address, a utility bill or other document containing your name and current address will suffice.

You must also have at least one form of ID that contains a recent photograph. The ID must be government issued and non-expired.  It must also include your name, address, date of birth, signature, and photograph. GED Testing Service accepts the following primary forms of ID:

  • Passport
  • Driver’s license
  • Learner’s permit
  • National/state/country identification card
  • DJJ ID Document (testers residing in juvenile detention/holding facilities)
  • Half-way House ID Document (testers residing in a correctional half-way house or on residential supervised release)
  • Job Corps or Youth Challenge Document and program-issued photo ID (students in Job Corp program or Youth Challenge academy)
  • Any other form of government-issued ID (national or foreign), including Matricula Consular

(Students can provide more than one form of identification to meet the requirements above.)

Please arrive at the test center 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. This will allow you enough time to complete the check-in procedures before beginning your exam.

If you arrive more than 15 minutes after your appointment time and are refused admission, the exam and delivery fees are not refundable.

You must also bring your GED test admission ticket, which you will receive from the EKU Office of Adult Education or your local Adult Education Center.

You will be photographed upon admittance to ensure test security.
