Proficiency Evaluation FAQs

Q: Do I have to have a job in order to begin the Proficiency Evaluation process?

A: No, you can initiate request for approval without having a job offer. If approved to begin the proficiency evaluation review process and recommend for admission by the review committee and Dean, a 90 Day Letter will be issued to you to be included as part of your application for the hiring process.

Q: How long will it take to complete the Proficiency Evaluation process?

A: To a large degree, the length of time it takes to complete the process, once approved, depends on how quickly you submit the required items necessary to convene the faculty Proficiency Review Committee. Upon receipt of all required documentation, a meeting of the faculty Proficiency Review Committee will be scheduled within five business days.

Q: Do I have to complete any additional coursework/what are the curriculum requirements for a Proficiency program?

A: The additional coursework/curriculum requirements will depend on any deficiencies or gaps identified by the faculty Proficiency Review Committee upon review of the documentation submitted and completion of the interview, if conducted.

Q: How long do I have to complete the requirements of a Proficiency Provisional?

A: A candidate may only hold Proficiency Provisional Certification for a maximum of two years, with the certification being issued for one year and renewable for one additional year.

Q: Can I teach while I am completing the Proficiency Evaluation?

A: While EKU cannot recommend you for Proficiency Provisional certification until final approval of the Committee and the Dean of the College of Education, the school district may have alternative licensure routes available.

Q: Once I complete the Proficiency Evaluation can I apply for a job?

A: Yes, upon approval by the Committee and the Dean, a 90 Day Letter will be issued to you to be included as part of your application for the hiring process.

Q: Do I have to have completed a teacher education program in order to be eligible to begin a Proficiency Evaluation?

A: No, if you are seeking an initial certification, completion of a teacher education program is not required.

Q: What if I am not approved for Proficiency? Do I have other options that will allow me to teach?

A: If you are not approved for a Proficiency Evaluation process, you may seek admission to the appropriate traditional route program.

Q: Is there a charge for the Proficiency?

A: Yes, there is a charge of $500.00 for each area of initial certification requested and $250.00 for each area of advanced certification requested. Payments can be made at Payment Portal.

Q: Can I apply for financial aid to assist in the completion of course requirements?

A: Please contact Financial Aid at Big E Central.

Q: Can I use the credit hours required towards a rank change?

A: If you have been admitted to a Rank 1 program, your advisor may approve applicable graduate-level coursework taken in the proficiency process.

Q: I don’t understand how to complete the portfolio. Who can I speak with concerning getting assistance?

A: Once you have been approved to begin the proficiency review, you will be assigned a program advisor who will provide guidance on completing your portfolio.

Q: Why do I have to take additional coursework if I have already completed a Rank I?

A: Only coursework that is applicable to the specific certification sought is considered for the proficiency review process. Therefore, while any relevant coursework completed in a Rank 1 program would be considered, the Rank 1 does not necessarily fulfill the content requirements for a specific licensure area.

Q: Who do I contact if I have additional questions?

A: You may email certification.alternative_routes@EKU.EDU, or call 859-622–8326 with any additional questions concerning this route.
